Seamus McGrath Biography
Seamus McGrath is one of the most popular and richest Sport Cyclist who was born on March 5, 1976 in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Seamus Patrick McGrath (born 5 March 1976 Mississauga, Ontario) is a retired Canadian professional mountain biker. In the sport for over 15 years as part of the Canadian national team, McGrath has won two medals for mountain biking at the Commonwealth Games (2002 and 2006) as well as representing his country Canada in two different editions of the Olympic Games (2004 and 2008). After retiring to concentrate on organizing and coordinating each year’s Tour de Victoria race in the final months of 2008 McGrath was also a racer and trainer professionally for Haro-Lee Dungaree and Fuji Bikes under an exclusive contract of sponsorship.
In 2013, the disgraced cycling star Michael Rasmussen wrote a book entitled Yellow Fever in which he claimed that Seamus McGrath, along with two other Canadian mountain bikers (Ryder Hesjedal, and Chris Sheppard ) travelled to Spain in 2003 in order to ensure that Michael Rasmussen could show them how to utilize doping drugs correctly. In the work, Rasmussen writes that Seamus McGrath, Ryder Hesjedal and Chris Sheppard all received guidance regarding doping from him “A good result in the world championships could send them to the Olympics in Athens in 2004,” Rasmussen wrote. “They moved into my basement in August, before I went to the Vuelta a Espana, and right after I had ridden the Meisterschaft von Zurich. There, they stayed around 14 days’ time. I trained with them in the Dolomites and taught them how to [make] vitamin injections and how you took EPO and Synacthen [cortisone].” Seamus admitted to using the doping drugs but only for the time during which Michael Rasmussen claimed to have taught the three cyclists how to utilize the doping drugs. In a 2013 statement, Seamus stated, “When I became aware of doping in my early 20s, I made a promise to myself to commit to clean sport,” McGrath stated in an announcement. “I did not keep the promise I made to myself in 2003. I’d like to take this opportunity to express my regrets first and foremost to my parents for instilling into me the importance of morality and values which I renounced for a short time over 10 years back. I also want to express my regrets to my friends, family as well as sponsors and fans who have supported me throughout my career.” McGrath said, “along with my teammates during that time. I swore off the sport I have a passion for and am embarrassed by my actions. I violated sporting rules and acted against what I believed to be right. For this, I’ll forever be in awe.”
In the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, McGrath qualified for his second Canadian squad at the age of 32, a senior in the cross-country event for men in Beijing. He was granted one of the three berths available through the Canadian Cycling Association as well as the Union Cycliste Internationale, based on his top performance at the World Cup series, World Championships and the Mountain Biking World Series. McGrath did not manage to match his spectacular performance from Athens however, since he was hit with an injury to his tyre and was forced to take the rim through the zone of technology to fix the flat tyre. Recognizing that his new wheel had a slow leak in the area he had designated, McGrath decided to end his race with just three laps remaining and a fourth-place finish.
