American novelist who became a breakout star in 2012 with the release of his debut novel, the fantasy epic Throne of the Crescent Moon, which earned him a Locus Award. He is also an essayist for outlets like Salon, BuzzFeed and The New York Times. Ahmed was born in 1975 in Detroit, Michigan to parents of Lebanese, Egyptian, Irish, and Polish descent. His father, Ismael Ahmed, formerly in the merchant marine, worked both in a factory and as a community organizer. His mother was a political activist..
