Gupta received the Abolitionist award from the House of Lords in 2007. This is the upper house of Parliament of the United Kingdom. In 1996, Gupta’s documentary The Selling of Innocents on sex-trafficking between India and Nepal won a News & Documentary Emmy Award.
Gupta testified before the United States Senate to support the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000. He also lobbied together with activists at the United Nations for a U.N. These groups allow women and girls to access education, livelihood training and safe housing. They also advocate for changes in Indian Law. Gupta’s leadership was instrumental in organizing women to fight for legal change. The Criminal Law Amendment Act made trafficking a criminal offense for the first-time in Indian history.

After leaving the United Nations, she worked with governments in Iran, Nepal, Thailand and Cambodia. Some of these countries were supported by her to create National Action Plans and laws against humantrafficking. UNODC and UNIFEM supported her in writing two manuals about combating trafficking for law enforcement officers and prosecutors. Gupta was also a UNICEF contact for the October 2000 gathering of Messengers of Peace, Goodwill Ambassadors.
Gupta strives to educate the next generation of activists on best practices in combating trafficking. In this respect, she has designed modules on understanding, and tackling, human trafficking for Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi. Since 2012, she has designed and taught courses at New York University’s Center for Global Affairs on “Movement Building around Sex Trafficking”. Ruchira also teaches courses on modern day slavery at Seton Hall University.
