Rocky Long is one of the most popular and richest American Football Coach who was born on January 27, 1950 in Provo, Utah, United States. Roderick John Long Jr. was born January 27, 1950 and is an American football coach. He currently serves as the University of New Mexico’s defensive coordinator and is also the University of New Mexico’s head coach. Long was previously the head football coach of San Diego State University. Long played professionally for the BC Lions of Canada Football League (CFL), and the Detroit Wheels (WFL).

Long resigned after a 11-season career. This was two days after the end of the Lobos regular season. Long stated that he wasn’t the right person for the job of leading the program to greater heights. He stated that he did not plan to retire and that he would like to continue his work as a coach. After two seasons as the defensive coordinator, he was promoted in 2011 to San Diego State’s head coach.

Long led the Lobos in three consecutive bowl games between 2003 and 2005, which was a first for program history. From 2001 to 2007, the Lobos were bowl eligible for seven consecutive seasons, a program record. The streak was continued in 2007 when the Lobos received a bid for the New Mexico Bowl. Long won his bowl victory with a win over the Nevada Wolf Pack.

From 1969 to 1971, Long was the starting quarterback of the New Mexico Lobos football club. He won consecutive championships and was awarded player-of the-year in the Western Athletic Conference in 1971. Long’s professional career began in 1972 with the BC Lions (CFL), where he played in 68 games. He moved to the Detroit Wheels (WFL) in 1974. He intercepted three passes that resulted in 38 return yards. He also returned 20 punts for 217 yard and 14 kickoffs for 402 yard. Three years later, he returned to the Lions and had one his best years with them. In 1975, he intercepted eight passes for 88 yards. Long was a Western All-Star in 1977 and led the team’s punt returns for the last three years. He is still the fourth-leading all-time punter with 46 yards on 192 returns with one touchdown.

Long was appointed the New Mexico head football coach in December 1997. In 11 seasons, his overall record of wins and losses was 65-69. His 65 wins are the record for most head coaches in program history. Roy W. Johnson’s record of 41 wins in 2005 was long surpassed by Long.
