He was born in Sangerhausen, East Germany, Nachtweih made the move from East Germany to West Germany in 1976, joining Eintracht Frankfurt, for which they played him as a midfielder during five Bundesliga seasons and scored 25 goals over the final three seasons and also winning in the season 1979-1980 UEFA Cup (11 appearances, one goal) against league rivals Borussia Monchengladbach.
In the summer of 1982, Nachtweih joined FC Bayern Munich and played in 10 goals and 85 games during the time that the Bavarians have won three consecutive national championships in 1985-87 (of the four he won in his time) in addition to playing regularly as an defence. When 1989 came around, the player aged 32 moved to France and joined AS Cannes, partnering a young Zinedine Zidane for the two Ligue 1 seasons, and helping the club to qualify for an UEFA Cup in his first.
