Nick Sakiewicz, born January 14, 1961, is the current commissioner of the National Lacrosse League. He has held this position since January 7, 2016. The NLL has seen tremendous growth under Sakiewicz’s watch. It has grown from nine to thirteen teams and has seen an increase of attendance each year since the 2016-2017 season.

Sakeiwicz was a founding executive of Major League Soccer in 1995 and was appointed the first Vice President for Commercial Sponsorship Sales. Sakiewicz was an MLS executive who helped to grow the league from ten in 1996 to 23 before he left for the NLL in 2015.

Sakiewicz, a former professional soccer goalkeeper, was previously a founding partner, CEO, and operating partner of the Philadelphia Union. He is a Major League Soccer veteran with 21 years of experience and was part the small group that founded the League in 1995. As the league’s first Vice President for Sponsorship Sales, he was also instrumental in its launch. He went on to be the president and general manger of the MetroStars and Tampa Bay Mutiny, two of the inaugural teams. He was also responsible for the construction of two stadiums that were specifically designed for soccer (New York and Philadelphia), and cofounded Major League Soccer’s 16th expansion team, the Philadelphia Union. He was the Operating Partner and CEO of Keystone Sports & Entertainment, LLC, which is the owner group of the Philadelphia Union. He was a player in the Major Indoor Soccer League as well as the American Professional Soccer League, and he coached youth and college soccer.

Sakiewicz was the son of a Polish immigrant mother and father. He attended the University of New Haven, where he played for the NCAA Division II soccer team between 1979 and 1982. He was an All-New England goalkeeper for the 1982, 1983 and 1983 seasons. He also played on the 1982 Division II Second team All American goalkeeper. After graduating from New Haven University, he moved to Europe and played as a development player in FC Nantes. In 1984, he also spent some time with the Belenenses of Portugal. In 1983-1984, he returned to America and played for New York Arrows in the Major Indoor Soccer League. After sustaining a severe leg injury, he took a long break from the professional soccer game and began to pursue business opportunities. He continued playing and coaching at the amateur level while pursuing business opportunities. He returned to professional soccer in 1990 for one season with Tampa Bay Rowdies, American Professional Soccer League. After his retirement from the game, Sakiewicz was a coach for youth soccer in Florida. He also served as an assistant coach at College of Boca Raton. Sakiewicz, a co-owner of South Florida’s Ezell-Titterton Inc. in the late 1980s.

On October 2, 2015, Sakiewicz was removed from his duties as CEO and Operating Partner of the Philadelphia Union. Majority owner Jay Sugarman cited a difference in philosophy regarding the management of the franchise as the reason for his dismissal. Sakiewicz had also developed a contentious relationship with fans and the local media. In May 2015 he was the target of a protest by Philadelphia Union fans at PPL Park. Following his dismissal, allegations arose that Sakiewicz had threatened members of the local media with libel suits for their reporting on the franchise.
