Jesus Alou was born on March 24, 1942 in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He was the youngest of four brothers, all of whom would eventually become professional baseball players. At the age of 17, Jesus signed with the San Francisco Giants and began his professional career in 1960.
Jesus quickly became a fan favorite in San Francisco, earning the nickname "The Dominican Dandy" for his flashy style of play. He was an All-Star in 1966 and 1967 and won two Gold Glove Awards in 1965 and 1966. He was also a part of the Giants' World Series championship team in 1962.
