Harry Leary Biography

Harry Leary is one of the most popular and richest Sport Cyclist who was born on February 22, 1959 in Lynwood, California, United States. Harry Clarence Leary Jr. was born February 22, 1959 in Lynwood (California). He was later raised in West Covina (California) and was a professional bicyclist motocross (BMX).

Named “Scary Harry Leary” and “Turbo”, both for his aggressive racing style, “Turbo” was a nickname given by Bicycle Motocross Action magazine to him after he “Turboed himself” to National No. After being a bit behind in the national standings in 1981, he was ranked 2 in both American Bicycle Association (ABA), and National Bicycle League(NBL) respectively. From 1978 to 1985, his prime competitive years were. In 1989, he officially retired as BMX Senior Pro (“AA”) in the ABA and “A (Elite Men in the NBL). For the three previous years he was largely inactive but served as Diamond Back’s factory manager. In the early 1990s, he came out of retirement to race in the ABA Veteran Pro class. He is currently racing at 48 years old.

Height and weight at peak of his career (1983): Ht:5’6″, Wt:167 lbs

One of the most respected racers in BMX history, his career was not as laden with titles as many of his contemporaries. His career was plagued by many injuries, in particular his knees which cut many promising seasons off and required surgery. Also, he had trouble dealing with the fame, as limited to the BMX world as it was, that his career brought. He went as far as to attend a sports medicine clinic for stress management in July 1984. He met many stars of the more established sports at the facility. The stresses that come with the burden of fame was and is a widespread if little discussed aspect in the career of a top amateur or professional athlete.

Turned pro* at age 18 He was one the eight first professional athletes. Bob Hadley was credited by Leary for starting the pro class. BMX Action Bike October/November 1982 Issues.4 pg.33

Although many have claimed credit for this jump or given credit, Jeff Utterback and Tim Judge are among those who claim credit. However, a photograph in the October 1976 issue Bicycle Motocross Weekly confirms Leary’s first documented case of someone doing a “Leary”. The maneuver was known generically as a helicopter at the time of the controversy. The “Lookback” is the modern version of the “Leary”. This is an extreme form of the “Leary”, where the knees are perfectly locked and the legs are parallel to the ground. The bicycle’s head tube points straight at the rider’s waist. The crank arms are perpendicular to the ground and the rider’s feet rest perfectly on the pedals. The “Turndown” variation is another. The rider holds the bike in front of him, i.e. The front of the bike is pointed toward the sky, with the rider facing the back wheel. The bicycle’s head tube points toward the rider’s chest. The “Turndown Flip” is another extreme variation. It involves the rear wheel pointing almost entirely toward the sky, with the rider facing the front.
