Racaniello was a baseball player in the varsity baseball team at Westhill High School, including the role of catcher. He was able to play in the baseball team of Norwalk Community College for two years, and was a co-teammate with the future MLB pitching coach Erik Bedard. In 1998, the team of Racaniello at Norwalk was crowned the winners of the NJCAA Division III Baseball World Series. After that, Racaniello transferred to Central Connecticut State University in Connecticut, where he played baseball as well.

Racaniello prefers to stay still inside his Mets clubhouse, while reading his books and keeping his distance. He is close to third-baseman David Wright, who first met him prior to his 2004 campaign. Racaniello is an active athlete and has been on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in January 2012 and also completed his way through the New York City Marathon twice. In 2011 Racaniello had eaten 14 cheesesteaks in a bid to beat Dmitri Young’s record of the most consumed food in his time in the Philadelphia Phillies visiting clubhouse. In 2016, his wedding to his long-time girlfriend and who is a St. Louis native, was announced on the scoreboard of Busch Stadium.
