Christopher D'Arcangelo Biography

Christopher D'Arcangelo is one of the most popular and richest American artist who was born on January 23, 1955 in Governors Island, New York, United States. Christopher D’Arcangelo (23 January 1955 – 28 April 1979) was an American artist who worked from the 1970s and died in 1979. He was a fervent advocate of anarchism. He was the father of American painting artist Allan D’Arcangelo.

Then, in January of 1977, the artist released his proposal “LAICA as an Alternative to Museums” in the journal of the closed Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art. In the latter part of the 1970s, D’Arcangelo worked with art-maker Peter Nadin, in a series of artworks (in in the shape of contracts and documents) that showcased their day-to-day work of rehabilitating loft spaces, mostly within Lower Manhattan, as “a means of surviving in a capitalist economy.” While the documentation in type that both artists distributed in circulars, contained an invitation to look at the final work, there was no claim was made that the result of their work, which they called “functional constructions”, represented artworks in the traditional sense.

The collaboration culminated in an evolving group exhibition at 84 West Broadway which opened on 9 November 1978. The exhibition began with a presentation of an empty exhibition space, entitled 30 Days Work, in reference to the amount of labor the two artists (along with fellow laborer Nick Lawson) had invested in refurbishing the space as a gallery. The first in a series of invitation cards announcing the exhibition was headed with the statement: “The work shown in this space is a response to the existing conditions and or work previously shown in the space.”

In 1991, the artist Christopher Williams produced a work Bouquet for Bas Jan Ader and Christopher D’Arcangeo… 1991. Further references to D’Arcangelo have been included in recent works by the artists Ben Kinmont and Mario García Torres.

Between 1976 and the time of his demise, he worked on an exhibit proposal in his museum, the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven.

Long live anarchism.” The words “anarchism” in the initial sentence as well as the entire next sentence was stenciled upside-down.
