Alison Chesley is one of the most popular and richest Cellist who was born on January 4, 1960 in Los Angeles, California, United States. As of June 1, 2023, Alison has a net worth approximately $5 Million. Chesley, in addition to Helen Money has composed music for theater, film and dance. She also wrote two major pieces for Chicago’s Mordine and Company Dancing Theater, Quest, and Time Stilled. She was awarded a full scholarship in 2007 to study composition at Oakland’s Mills College with Fred Frith, guitarist/composer. She declined the offer and chose to focus on her new role as Helen Money.

Verbow ended in 2001, and Chesley began a new career as a performer/composer and session musician in Chicago. Two of Chicago’s most popular recording studios, Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio and Soma Studios, were where she recorded the majority of her recordings. Her credits include Mono, Anthrax and Broken Social Scene, Russian Circles as well as Chris Connelly, Poi Dog Pondering, Disturbed, and Chris Connelly. She is also featured on the albums of Rachel Grimes and Bob Mould. Chesley returned to Los Angeles in 2011 and began touring under the name Helen Money. She has been touring extensively in the U.S. since then, opening for artists such as Shellac and Nina Nastasia. Chesley was on Bob Mould’s Workbook 25 tour in spring 2015 and made an appearance on Late Show with David Letterman.
Chesley’s debut solo album, entitled Helen Money, was released by Cellobird Records on September 2007. The second album, In Tune, which she released as Helen Money was released by the Table of the Elements label. In Tune was recorded by Greg Norman at Electrical Audio and mixed by Sanford Parker at Semaphore Studios, Chicago. Arriving Angels was her third Helen Money album. It was released in 2013 by the Profound Lore label. Steve Albini recorded it and mixed it at Electrical Audio. A new Helen Money album, Become Zero was scheduled for release on Thrill Jockey Records, September 2016. Will Thomas and Ken Sluiter recorded it in Los Angeles at Neutral Studios, East/West Studios, and Will Thomas mixed it.

Chesley was raised in Los Angeles. Chesley moved to Chicago to study at Northwestern University. She received her master’s in cello performance from the university in 1994. Hans Jorgen Jensen was her teacher. Chesley met Jason Narducy while at Northwestern. They formed an acoustic duo called Jason and Alison, which was renamed Verbow. Verbow went on to record two albums for Epic Records- Chronicles, produced and produced by Bob Mould and White Out, created and produced by Brad Wood. Verbow toured the country for seven years, opening for bands such as Frank Black, Bob Mould and Counting Crows. Chesley was greatly influenced by Bob Mould’s work and met him while working on the Helen Money project, which focuses on aggressive, amplified cello.
